A Saturday in three different kinds of building
An aircraft cockpit, a sandstone shelter and a hall of industrial machinery make an unusual day together. The route starts at Woodford, moves into Stockport for lunch and finishes in Manchester. People interested in engines get plenty to examine; everyone else gets three different ways to think about the places people built around machines.
The driving between parking points is about 26 km / 16 miles. Allow 1–1½ hours on the road, plus walks from the car parks. The full outing needs roughly seven hours, from Avro opening at 10:00 to a Manchester finish before 17:00. This is the Saturday version, chosen to fit the published opening patterns.
| Suggested time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 10:00–11:30 | Avro Heritage Museum in Woodford |
| Around 12:00–14:00 | Stockport: lunch and the Air Raid Shelters |
| Around 14:30–16:30 | Science and Industry Museum, Manchester |
Those times allow some slack, but not an extra long tour at every stop. If one place becomes the highlight of the day, reduce the final visit rather than rushing through traffic. Travel to Woodford and the journey home from Manchester are additional.
Woodford: begin with the aeroplanes
Avro Heritage Museum customer parking — allow 1½ hours.
Arrive for the public opening and concentrate on the museum’s aircraft story. Cockpit visits are offered during normal public opening hours, according to the museum’s FAQ, but their availability, access and ticket arrangements should be checked before making them the reason for the trip.
The museum stands on the former Woodford aerodrome site. Its outdoor Vulcan is a useful reminder of the scale involved, though this is mainly an indoor outing. Expect a short walk outside and take a coat even if the forecast has sent you looking for a day under cover.
Follow the museum’s current arrival instructions: from Chester Road, use Lancastrian Way at the mini roundabout. The surrounding housing streets are not overflow parking. Our pin is in the museum’s customer-parking area, rather than on the aircraft or at an old airfield entrance.
At the research date, normal public opening was Friday to Sunday, 10:00–16:00, with separate arrangements on other days. A car-club visit or photograph alongside the Vulcan requires advance arrangements; arriving in an interesting car does not create a booking.

Next: about 15 km to Stockport, using the A34 and a section of the M60 in the illustrated route. Allow 30–40 minutes and follow current signs into the car park.
Stockport: lunch, then underground
Merseyway/Redrock car-park approach — allow about two hours including lunch.
Stockport’s Air Raid Shelters are purpose-built wartime tunnels in sandstone. After the display spaces at Avro, the change in scale is immediate: the next part of the day is about the people sheltering beneath a town, rather than the aircraft above it.
Use the council’s current visit and tour information to choose admission. The standard self-guided visit and special tours have different arrangements; this timetable does not assume a separately booked Explorer or family tour. On Saturdays the council published opening from 10:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:00, when researched. Check again for your date and leave enough time for the kind of visit you book.
The map uses the Merseyway/Redrock parking approach. From there, allow time to walk to Chestergate, have lunch and return to the car. Read the entrance signs: parking-zone names, ramps and payment instructions can be more useful than a broad shopping-centre postcode.
Anyone who finds enclosed spaces difficult should look at the access information before deciding. Do not infer suitability from the short length of a suggested visit. If the shelters are unsuitable for someone in the party, keep lunch in Stockport and make the Manchester museum the longer stop.

Next: about 11 km to the First Street parking point in Manchester. Allow 30–45 minutes; central traffic and getting parked can take longer than the route distance suggests.
Manchester: finish among the engines
Q-Park First Street, then walk to the Science and Industry Museum — allow about two hours.
The final parking pin is not the museum entrance. Q-Park First Street is a commercial multi-storey; leave time for the walk to Liverpool Road and for returning to the car afterwards. Use the operator’s entrance directions and check current charges and height restrictions before booking a space.
At the museum, choose a manageable part of the collection. The visitor page lists Power Hall and the Textiles Gallery among its highlights, alongside other galleries. That gives a driver interested in machinery a reason to stop, without making the whole group spend an afternoon reading engine specifications.
The museum also warns that restoration work affects parts of the site and some buildings are closed. Plan around its current listings, not a recollection of everything that used to be open. General museum admission is free, with advance booking recommended; particular exhibitions and events may be charged separately.
The published daily closing time was 17:00 when researched. Aim to finish the main visit around 16:30 so the last half-hour does not become a race through rooms. If the journey into the centre has run late, pick one gallery and leave the rest for another visit.

Manchester also has a motoring story outside the museum: our Rolls-Royce notebook follows the city connection. It is a separate read, not an extra timed stop added to this day.
Before you go
Use a Saturday unless you have checked and rebuilt the timetable. Avro’s public opening pattern, the shelter hours and the Manchester closing time all matter. Bank-holiday arrangements differ, particularly in Stockport. Confirm any special tour or cockpit access before travelling.
This is a wet-weather alternative with short outdoor transfers, not a completely sheltered door-to-door experience. Check the venues’ own accessibility information for tunnels, cockpits, lifts and walking distances. Bring a coat and use footwear suited to wet pavements.
The Google Maps link connects the three car-parking points. It does not navigate the pedestrian sections to the shelters or museum. Follow current road signs, parking instructions and venue maps; traffic, temporary restrictions and available spaces can change.
Budget for Avro and shelter admission, commercial/public parking and food. General Manchester museum entry has different arrangements from its charged events. No current-price package is implied, and no personal visit is claimed. All visit lengths here are editorial estimates.
